From February 28th to March 2nd the fourth event of the UGP Tour WAGR 24-25 took place at Isla Canela Old Course in Huelva. The event hosted almost 40 national and international players.
The weather forecast predicted a rainy competition, but luckily it only rained on the first day of the competition, while the weekend was played in magnificent conditions for the practice of golf and with a course that was in very good condition.
As mentioned above, the special guest of the day was the rain, at certain times its intensity caused concerns about the possibility of suspension, but finally the intensity decreased and despite the difficult day, the favourites managed to overcome the field.
After the first day, a triple tie was established in the lead position, the British Lewis Gowdy and Joshua Hayes and the Mexican team member of the UGP program, Jose Manuel Fernandez, delivering a meritorious card of 70 strokes (-2), followed closely by Eladio Perez who also managed to play under par by submitting a card of 71 strokes (-1).
Saturday was played under optimal conditions, sunshine and no wind, and although the results were better than Friday in general, the course showed the difficulty of the shots from the tee, preventing any of the players to highlight in the classification.
Lewis Gowdy finished leading the day with another solid round of 70 (-2), while Eladio Perez and Jose Manuel Fernandez delivered rounds of 71 (-1) and 72 (Par) respectively, being two strokes off the lead and making up the stellar match that would fight for the victory on Sunday.
On Sunday the players took to the course early, with the sky threatening rain and some air, but finally the weather respected the game, and we were able to enjoy another beautiful day of golf.
The expected battle of three, was finally reduced to two by the strong performance of Lewis Gowdy and Eladio Perez, who kept the fight until the final hole, but the strength shown by Gowdy the previous days was demonstrated back on Sunday by presenting again a card of 70 strokes (-2), proclaiming brilliant champion, being in second position and two strokes away, Eladio Perez.
The fifth round of the UGP Tour WAGR, will be held from 4th to 6th of April 2025, at the Añoreta Golf course in Malaga, a course that will again test the quality of the players who dispute it.
