The Añoreta Golf Resort course in Málaga hosted the fifth event of the UGP Tour WAGR 2024-25, held from April 4th to 6th. The course was presented in excellent playing condition for the 40 players who came to take on the technical challenge of Añoreta.
On Friday, the weather was expected to play a key role, and so it was. Heavy rain made playing conditions difficult, and combined with the natural challenges of the course, the round turned into a day of survival to avoid very high scores.
Nicolás Moreno, the Cantabrian player, adapted best to the conditions, leading the day with a well-fought round of 75 (+3) strokes. He was closely followed by Luis Lasa and Sara Moreno, both from the UGP team, who managed impressive rounds of 76 (+4) strokes.
Saturday saw no rain, but a light sea breeze accompanied the players throughout the day, making it difficult to post low scores.
It was a key day for the favourites to make a move toward the final victory. Jorge Sánchez, the local player and eventual winner, and Ignacio Laulhé topped the leaderboard alongside Nicolás Moreno, all finishing with a total of 152 (+8) strokes. Just one stroke behind was the young player from Málaga, Oliver de Wint. These four players would form the stellar match on Sunday.
Sunday began with clear skies and no wind, giving players a chance to post their best rounds of the tournament.
As for the result of the stellar game, from the beginning the local player, Jorge Sanchez stepped on the accelerator and displaying a great game came to get -4 on the day, after 10 holes, leaving practically no options to their rivals. Ignacio Laulhé’s round of 72 (Par) on the day was not enough to overcome Jorge Sánchez’s solid round of 69 (-3), who deservedly retained his home title.
The sixth and final event of the UGP Tour WAGR 24/25, will be held from 2 to 4 May 2025, in the course of the Parador de Malaga Golf, a tournament in which it is expected a large number of players to put a nice ending to the season.
