The boost to college golf thanks to the R&A.

On this occasion, in our section “UGPM Style“, we want to talk about one of the largest entities in the world of golf and its outstanding circuit of university golf competitions:

The Royal and Ancient of St Andrews

The R&A is a major golf organization located in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Together with the USGA (United States Golf Association) it shares the governance of golf.

Each organization has its own jurisdiction: the USGA “rules” in the United States and Mexico, and the R&A in the rest of the world. The R&A’s jurisdiction encompasses 143 amateur and professional golf organizations, regulating the game of more than 30 million players in more than 126 countries.

The R&A covers very important functions such as regulating and updating the rules of golf, organizing the famous The Open, preserving the heritage of golf among others.

Of all the tournaments they run, we’d like to highlight the R&A Student Tour Series. Said circuit was created in 2019 with the objective of organizing very high-level amateur championships, in order to improve the competition between the main university golfers outside the United States and Mexico.

This season the circuit spanned 4 qualifying events in Scotland, France, Portugal and Spain. After the last qualifying event played in Spanish territory, the best college golf players will face each other in April in the Student Tour Series Final at the legendary St Andrews course.

What we haven’t told you yet is that the last test was not only played in Spain, but it was played in our beloved Parador de Málaga Golf course last week. The tournament was held on March 8, 9 and 10, and for 3 days we had the pleasure of hosting more than 70 university golfers from 15 different countries.

In addition, 3 of the best players on our team participated. Two of them in the men’s category and one in the women’s category, which managed to get second place, staying just one stroke away from victory.

Finally, we can only tell you that there are two players who will represent the college golf team UGP Málaga in the grand final in St. Andrews next April. Nicolás Moreno and Esperanza Serrano will have the honor of living an experience that we all believe we dream of at some point.
